ICT Knowing when, where and why.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is the backbone of SymbioCity. It's all about easily accessing, analyzing, and sharing vital information in and between all urban systems. ICT enables the transformational changes towards a more resource efficient city.

Resource and efficiency gains

Essential decisions about the city can only be made with access to the right information. With smart monitoring and information systems, the decision process can be highly efficient – or even automated. This increases efficient resource use in both the short and long term, which will ultimately reduce CO2 emissions across the board.

Access to information

Sharing information across multiple sectors within a city is crucial to a cost-efficient and smooth work process. Municipalities, public authorities, universities, private companies, and other institutions can all save resources and money with the SymbioCity approach.

Benefit to citizens

There is much to be gained when citizens connect with their city. For example, in a smart electrical grid, electricity prices can fluctuate during the day according to demand. This way, the user can decide when their appliances should run. Anything from factory machinery to home appliances (such as washing machines) can be automatically turned on when electricity is cheaper. This technology saves energy and avoids peak loads on the system. In Sweden, an innovative smart grid system is being built in Stockholm Royal Seaport – an area that will house 25,000 inhabitants when completed.

How can ICT help you?

  • Smart logistics save transportation fuel as well as electricity, heating, and storage space.
  • Digitalized communications reduce the need for transportation.
  • Smart power grids avoid peak loads, save electricity, and make use of multiple energy sources.
  • Smart monitoring helps buildings and factories become highly energy efficient.
  • Defined systems for measuring and evaluating facilitate mayors’ decisions.
  • Delivery of digital services in sectors such health services, education,
    e-government.
  • Facilitates citizen participation.
